Today's Thought: How to think on your feet when asked a difficult question

Posted on September 10, 2018 by Eduardo Bryant

We all know the "Deer in the headlights look!" It's the look when your boss asks a question you weren't expecting or when a client does their homework and asks a question you hadn't anticipated. Your character is put to the test in this moment and your reputation can be changed forever. Here are three things you can do to never let them see you sweat.

  1. Never lie-if you are not sure of the answer, show your vulnerability by telling the person they've asked a question you had not anticipated. This will make them feel good because you've just complimented them on being smart by asking a tough question. Next, tell them you're not sure of the correct answer but you'll find it out and get back to them... and get back to them.
  2. Share the answer-here is what I mean. If you are in a meeting and you believe the answer is in the room, answer the part of the question you know and then refer the rest of the question to someone you believe knows.
  3. State the facts-the best way to think on your feet is to simply state the facts.
